December 3, 2021
An estimated $2.7 billion was raised in the United States during the tenth annual GivingTuesday event, a 9 percent increase from 2020, the GivingTuesday Data Commons reports.
The 2021 U.S. totals for online and offline giving are up from $2.47 billion in 2020 and $1.9 billion in 2019. Based on data from Benevity, Blackbaud, Charity Navigator, Classy, DonorPerfect, DonorsChoose, Facebook, GlobalGiving, Global Impact, GoFundMe, Network for Good, PayPal, and other organizations, the Data Commons estimate that thirty-five million adults in the U.S. participated in GivingTuesday 2021, a 6 percent increase over last year. The event’s organizers estimate that volunteering and donations of goods also increased, by 11 percent and 8 percent, respectively.
Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Fidelity Charitable, the Ford Foundation, Ford Motor Company, LinkedIn for Nonprofits, and the National Philanthropic Trust, GivingTuesday saw campaigns held around the globe, including Brazil, Finland, France, Guam, Italy, Nepal, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and Ukraine.
“This extraordinary show of generosity lit up the world against a backdrop of a dark two years. From every corner of the globe, there were countless amazing stories of kindness, connection, and community,” said GivingTuesday co-founder and CEO Asha Curran. “GivingTuesday is joyful even at the darkest of times, and [this past Tuesday] was about millions of people celebrating their ability to meaningfully impact their communities and the world. Giving is an important metric of civic participation, a way to build the kind of society we want to live in. Our hope is that this boost of generosity is an inspiration for continued giving, kindness, and recognition of our shared humanity each day of the year.”
