FedEx, one of the global leaders in express transportation, has risen to this challenge by strengthening its environmental conservation efforts in Taiwan. Partnering with the Society of Wilderness (SoW), FedEx has demonstrated how corporate social responsibility (CSR) can translate into tangible ecological benefits, particularly in safeguarding vital water resources.


A Vital Partnership for a Critical Resource

The Touchian River in Hsinchu, Taiwan, serves as a lifeline for the region, supplying over 90% of the local water. This water sustains agriculture, supports livelihoods, and is indispensable for the operations at the Hsinchu Science Park, a hub for Taiwan’s high-tech sector. Recognizing the river’s importance, FedEx and SoW collaborated to organize two impactful cleanup events on December 14 and 28, 2024.

These events brought together FedEx team members and their families to remove nearly 181 kilograms of waste from the riverside, emphasizing the power of collective action. Michael Chu, Managing Director of FedEx Taiwan, aptly captured the essence of this initiative:

“The Touchian River is a vital resource for the Hsinchu area, and our ongoing partnership with the Society of Wilderness underscores our dedication to environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility.”


Tackling Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution emerged as a significant issue during the cleanup efforts. Common debris included plastic bottles, bags, and disposable utensils—items that underscore the pervasive reliance on single-use plastics. Liu Yueh-Mei, Honorary Chairperson of SoW, highlighted the urgency of addressing this issue:

“A clean river is the key to a blue sea. Reducing plastic usage and minimizing single-use products are critical steps toward environmental sustainability.”

The cleanup also revealed large waste items in the river, emphasizing the need for stricter measures to prevent illegal dumping and wastewater discharge.


Beyond Cleanups: Environmental Education

FedEx’s commitment extends beyond physical cleanups. The company partnered with SoW to host an environmental education seminar titled “For Blue Seas, Start with Clean Streams.” This seminar explored Taiwan’s aquatic and marine environments, educating participants on the interconnectedness of rivers and oceans.

The seminar aimed to inspire behavioral change among FedEx team members, encouraging them to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives, such as reducing disposable plastic usage. By combining education with action, FedEx fosters a culture of environmental responsibility among its workforce.

FedEx’s efforts in Taiwan exemplify how corporations can drive meaningful environmental change by partnering with local organizations and engaging their communities.
