A sustainability report is an organizational report that gives information about economic, environmental, social and governance performance of the company.

In Simple Words

CSR/ Sustainability Reports are meant to communicate a company’s performance on areas which are beyond its regular revenue generating activities such as social activities, environmental impacts and other matters the company has addressed with respect to its CSR/ sustainability agenda. There are many reasons why companies issue a CSR report, but main reason is to be transparent about their activities and as a way to communicate their achievements or challenges in the realm of CSR. There are many frameworks used for CSR reporting but the most commonly used is the G3/G4 guidelines issued by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

CSR/ Sustainability Reporting started off in form of environmental reporting. The first environmental reports were published in the late 1980s by companies in the chemical industry which had serious image problems.
