Stone Foundation gives $4 million for Center for Inequality Dynamics
November 22, 2021
The University of Michigan has announced a $4 million gift from the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation to launch a center dedicated to better understanding and addressing rising wealth inequality.
To promote a more knowledgeable and inclusive society, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and the mitigation of wealth inequality, the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics will study changes and stability in inequality across generations, time, and place and propose solutions for addressing the causes. The interdisciplinary research hub will bring together inequality experts from across campus, the country, and the world; help train the next generation of scholars; and create new forms of public data that will enable a broad community of researchers and policy makers to address wealth inequality, including intergenerational poverty.
“Cathy and I have been concerned about growing economic inequality for decades. We both believe the study of wealth inequality is worthy of our greatest philanthropic commitment,” said James Stone, founder, chair, and CEO of the Plymouth Rock group of companies. “We’re excited to support the talented research team at the University of Michigan on such an important endeavor.”
