Community Conversations: Expanding Digital Access—Arrow Electronics & The N50 Project Empower Students in Mexico

Spread the love

The digital divide remains one of the biggest challenges in global education, with nearly half of the world’s schools lacking reliable online access and over 1.3 billion students unable to connect to the Internet at home. In an era where digital literacy determines access to opportunities, this gap limits countless students from reaching their full potential.

However, innovative initiatives like The N50 Project, in partnership with Arrow Electronics, are working to change that. Their latest milestone? A brand-new connected digital lab in Guadalajara, Mexico, designed to equip students with the skills they need to thrive in a fast-growing digital economy.

A Tech-Powered Path to Opportunity

Launched in a local primary school, the Guadalajara lab is equipped with 40 workstations, interactive SMART boards, and stable Internet connectivity—all aimed at transforming the learning experience for 160 fifth and sixth graders.

“The location where you were born should not keep you from accessing the digital world. That's the gap we're trying to close, and we work tirelessly to do it."
Daniel Gutwein, N50 Executive Director

This initiative is not just about providing computers—it’s about creating sustainable, scalable models that can be replicated in other under-connected regions worldwide.

The Power of the N50 Connectivity Kit

One of the most impressive aspects of this project is the N50 Connectivity Kit—a game-changing solution that maximizes limited resources. Instead of requiring separate devices for each student, this Intel-powered software solution transforms a single device into four independent workstations.

How It Works:

1. One computer becomes four: Students get full-sized monitors, keyboards, and mice, allowing them to work independently.
2. Teachers gain better classroom control: The kit includes software tools to help educators manage lessons efficiently.
3. Cost-effective & scalable: This innovative setup makes digital education more accessible and affordable—especially for schools in low-income regions.

With contributions from Intel, ApplianSys, SMART, and ASUS, Arrow Electronics plays a crucial role in integrating, shipping, and delivering these kits while also providing long-term mentorship to students.

Scaling Impact Beyond Guadalajara

The Guadalajara project is just the beginning. Arrow and The N50 Project are already preparing to deploy another lab in a technical high school in Mexico City, with even bigger ambitions on the horizon.

Over the next three years, The N50 Project aims to distribute hundreds of Connectivity Kits across Africa and the Americas, bringing the power of digital education to more underserved communities.

“At Arrow, we recognize the pivotal role we can play in benefiting the communities where we live and work. With this project, we aim to advance tech-forward innovations that enhance the lives of students and broaden STEM education opportunities.”
Gretchen Zech, Arrow Senior VP & Chief Governance, Sustainability, and HR Officer

With Mexico planning to build thousands of new high schools, the potential for expansion is enormous. If scaled successfully, this model could redefine digital education accessibility for millions of students.

Why This Matters for Global CSR & Sustainability

This initiative isn’t just about education—it’s about equity, opportunity, and sustainability. By providing affordable digital access, projects like this ensure that students from underprivileged communities have a fair shot at the future.
